Born to Allen and Minnie Klotz, Babe was a basketball and track star at Girard College and would go on to a long basketball career, mainly with the SPHA's. He was a civil engineer, joining the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1920. He was a pioneer in river dredging techniques, mainly known for the sump rehandling method. He retired in 1953, and died of a heart attack in 1962.

He married Emma Anthony and they had two daughters.
