Born to Nathan and Pearl DeLong, Nate went to Chippewa Falls HS and served in the U.S. Navy after graduating. When he returned, he went to college at River Falls Teachers College (now the University of Wisconsin in River Falls.) He played pro basketball for the Sheboygan Redskins in 1950-51, and signed on to play in the NBA with the Milwaukee Hawks for one season. He taught and coached for many years in Durand, Wisconsin, and moved on to Hayward, where he would be a principal for many years. He continued to teach until his 1986 retirement.

He married Donna Wells (d. 2008) in 1948 and they had a son and a daughter.
