Born in the suburbs of Fresno, Vern's father Michael, a Lutheran minister, moved the family to Askov when Vern was young. He entered Hamline University at the age of 16. He signed with the Lakers out of college and over 10 seasons there helped the Lakers to four NBA titles, along side Jim Pollard, Slater Martin and George Mikan. He later worked as the GM and head coach for the ABA's Minnesota entry. In 1995, Mikkelsen was elected in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.


Vern and his wife Jean (d. 2002) had two sons.
