Gilmur graduated from Washington and went into the U.S. Army. After World War 2, he played five season in the BAA/NBA before returning to Washington. He worked as a teacher and coach at Lincoln HS in Tacoma, and then moved to Mount Tahoma High School.

He married Thelma Thureson in 1948 and they had two daughters and a son.
