Hassett played basketball at Georgetown, but when Georgetown dropped basketball due to World War 2, Hassett played a year of AAU ball before transferring over to Notre Dame. After graduating, he played in the NBL, PBLA and NBA.

Billy's older brother Buddy played pro basketball in the ABL and also played baseball for seven years in the major leagues.

  1. Billy Hassett worked for the Syracuse Nationals in various capacities. Most notably, he worked the shot clocks and also appeared in a few exhibition games for the Nats. Since stats for these games are not official, he never really played for them.
