Born to Herman and Antoni Lange in Mayville, Wisconsin, Lange played basketball, track and football at UW-Whitewater, leading the team to a championship his senior year. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War 2, flying missions in Italy. He returned from the war to play basketball professionally, first with Oshkosh in the NBL before suiting up with the Shooting Stars of Milwaukee. He started working in the insurance industry, moving east to Pennsylvania before heading to Casper, Wyoming, returned to where he received training while in the service.  He started his own insurance company there, and retired in 1992. He died in Mesa, Arizona, in 2012.

Lange married Elsie Ehritz in 1955, and they had two sons, Thomas and Richard, and two daughters, Carol and Jane.
