Dupee was born in Illinois to John and Hope Dupe, but the family moved to Freeport, Illinois, shortly thereafter. He lost vision in one eye in high school, but that did not handicap his basketball skills that
much. Starting out at Beloit College, he transferred to Wisconsin where he was named team captain as well as All-Big-Ten. After a season with Oshkosh, he returned to Freeport High School as a teacher and coach (and he also met his future wife of 67 years, Mary Katherine Ousley (1920-2012)... they mailed out their wedding invitations December 6, 1941, right before the US was drawn into World War 2. In 1947, the family moved to the Cincinnati area as he left education to work at U.S. Playing Card and the Heekin Can Company. In 1967, he and Katherine bought a franchise of Olsten Staffing in Cincinnati, a business he operated with his sons David and Daniel until selling it in 2000. David and Kat moved full-time to Naples, where David died in 2008 at 92 years of age. In addition to sons  David and Daniel, they also had two daughters, Dougie Trumble and Debbie (1942-2007).
